Using Your Environment to Deter Criminals
CPTED, or Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, uses physical space to reduce the chance of crimes occurring. These strategies help to make it undesirable or difficult, leading criminals to choose other locations to commit a crime. Instead, these principles increase safety and improve the appearance of yards, neighbourhoods and public spaces.
Implementing CPTED also helps to make people feel more secure in their environments. CPTED principles can be easy and cost-effective to follow. Examples of CPTED practices include lighting, deadbolts, fences, speed bumps, and traffic signs.
It is our responsibility as residents and business owners to prevent crime.
Consider joining the Smoky Lake County Rural Crime Watch, where we can provide you with information on current criminal activity in your area and prevention practices like CPTED. As well, if you would like to learn more about CPTED and other crime prevention tactics, there is training available.
